I remember one epic weekend B.C. (before child) where Roger and I stayed up all night until 5 or 6 the next morning, slept all day, and then went to a rock concert in Brooklyn after a quick dinner. It’s something I imagine we will never, ever do again.
The thing that keeps us up all night now…well, his name is Jack. His wildly unpredictable sleep patterns and general dislike of the resting state mean that we grab any opportunity to sleep. If we’re going to stay up late it had better be for something good!
More and more we’re starting to risk it though, three years into sleep deprivation and we’re starting to live dangerously. On the weekends we can help each other out and take turns napping. Oh the glamorous life we live! Try to contain your jealousy… The thing is though, we really miss movies, books, and adult television programs! We’re taking it back – one weekend at a time.
So let’s recap this past weekend.
Friday:
I stayed up well past midnight finishing this book. I simply could not put Tom Rachman’s The Imperfectionists down. This was Rachman’s debut novel – when he was 35. Way to make me feel like a loser, man. Beautifully written. I laughed, I cried, and gasped in shocked. It is so good. The Imperfectionists is the story of a dying English language newspaper in Rome. The novel bounces back and forth between stories of the paper’s early days in the 1950’s and the year 2004 when the paper is in dire financial difficulty. Each chapter tells one persons story and could very well stand alone. I should have been able to put it down to savor another few tales the next day, but I wanted more and more and more.
Definitely worth staying up late for, I could almost smell the newsprint I was so totally immersed in the world of these characters and their newspaper.
Saturday:
Yes, we’re just now finally getting around to seeing this past year’s Oscar nominees. It’s a sure sign of parenthood. Parental warning: this movie, American Hustle, is over two hours long. Perhaps watch it on an evening when you HAVEN’T stayed up the previous evening reading a book you can’t put down. It is wonderful though – I adored the hair and costumes and Jennifer Lawrence…can I please have your career? Please? Some of the plot didn’t really thrill me, I didn’t think it really had anything new to say about con artists, you know? But each performance was wonderful and I felt fully submersed and engaged in the world of these characters. Plus Amy Adams hair was amazing, it just really was. A+ in my book.
Did you read or watch anything worth staying up late for this weekend? Only four more days till Saturday, I need recommendations!
I saw Captain America. Great superhero movie. Very well done.
I’m sure as Jack gets older you two will rediscover your late nights and going out a bit. Stay strong!

Roger just watched a superhero movie the other night while I was out – he realized he’s missed every one that came out since Jack was born. We’ve got plans now to play catch up!
The Imperfectionists is one of my favorite books! What a wonderful story!

I could not put that book down! I’ve been recommending it high and low ever since finishing it.
